Styling polymers

"Active ingredients" that form bonds between hair strands

  • Water-based: Polyquaternium 4, Acrylates Copolymer, PVP / VA Copolymer, Polyquaternium 11
  • Alcohol-based: Acrylates / Dimethicone Copolymer, Octylaacrylamide / acrylates / Butylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer
  • Wax-based: Petrolatum,Beeswax, Oleth-5
Plasticizers & Neutralizers

Ingredients that modify polymer properties to make them more flexible and easier to wash out of hair

  • Aminomethyl propanol, Triethanolamine, Potassium Hydroxide, Isododecane, Aminomehtyl propanol
Solvents

Liquids that serve as carriers for other ingredients and then evaporate after product is applied to hair (usually water or ethanol)

  • Water, SD Alcohol

Thickeners

Ingredients make gels easier to apply

  • Hydroxyethylcellulose, Acrylates/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Copolymer, Carbomer
Conditioning Agents Help to improve softness and shine attributes
  • Propylene Glycol, Dimethicone Copolyol
Preservatives Prevent microbial contamination of product
  • DMDM Hydantoin, Disodium EDTA, Terasodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Propyl paraben
Propellants Pressurized gases to provide necessary force to push product out of container
  • Isobutane, Propane, Dimethyl Ether
Surfactants Used to help dissolve oils in a water-based system.  Also used in mousses to work together with propellant to create foam. Can improve spreadability of product
  • Peg 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, C9-11 Pareth 8, Isosteareth 20
Fragrances Impart a pleasant scent or cover up a raw material odor
