The chemical to be tested is introduced in a close flask containing water and some bacteria taken from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Once biodegradation starts, carbon dioxide is produced and trapped in the small flasks on the right. The analysis of the trapped CO2 is a direct indication of the biodegradability of the chemical tested. More CO2 produced, more biodegradable is the chemical.
